Hearing aids and tinnitus

Updated: Feb 12

Recent studies have suggested that 1 in 10 Irish people will experience tinnitus in their lifetime. Tinnitus is characterized by a ringing, buzzing or humming sound in the ears which, depending on its severity, can cause pain or frustration to the sufferer. Luckily thanks to huge advances in technology, there are devices that can help with symptoms.

Tinnitus Treatment with Hearing aids

While there is currently no definitive ‘cure’ for tinnitus, effective management strategies and treatments can significantly reduce its impact on daily life. In 2020, a trial involving 326 people with tinnitus took place in St James’s Hospital in Dublin, which turned out to be an effective tinnitus treatment in Ireland where sufferers were given a tongue simulation device designed by Neuromod Devices, and the results led medical staff to a medical breakthrough which essentially concluded that tinnitus originated in the brain, and not in the ear as was originally thought.

The study also found that all sufferers from tinnitus also had a coinciding hearing loss, and the correlation between the two was evident.

Cork Audiological Services specialises in providing personalised treatment options for individuals with tinnitus which will be assessed on an individualised basis. Regular check-ups with our audiologists at Cork Audiological Services are crucial for monitoring the progress of treatment, and these check-ups ensure that any necessary adjustments can be made to the treatment plan, leading to improved outcomes for individuals with tinnitus.
